Craig Kelly is/was one of my heros in the world of snowboarding. I started riding in 1986 and Craig was the best rider in the world. Everyone looked up to him every video you saw, every photo spread he was pushing the limits of the sport. He had the very first Pro-model the mystery air. After he stopped having boards named after him he still worked with Burton developing new boards such as the supermodel.
Craig’s death is as impacting to the snowboard world as Dale Earnhardt’s death was to the sport of NASCAR.
Craig was big in to Burton’s Chill program which helps underprivileged kids to learn how to snowboard. Not a lot of riders would do that in this day and age of big ego pro-riders.
I got to meet Craig a few time while I worked at a snowboard shop. He was down to earth and just a fun guy to talk to. I was also privileged enough to get to ride with him for a half day during one of the shop demos.
Now some people are going to say that he shouldn’t have been in the back-country. Now that’s far from true, Craig taught classes on avalanche safety. It just proves that even the most prepared rider can get in to trouble.
Craig you will be missed by all snowboarders we have so much to thank you for.
